Shawn Mehall, Navy Vet, Norfolk Fire-Rescue. Master Firefighter/Paramedic. Peer Support Team Specialist

Shawn Mehall's background, in his own words: arrived in the Hampton Roads area in 1998 serving in the USN.  Once my service was completed I looked for my purpose for a few years until I started Volunteer Firefighting in NC.  After a few years Norfolk took me on.  I currently enjoy my profession, but had to learn to not let it define who I am.  I have struggled with PTS, anger, depression, anxiety, hyper vigilance, and many more mentally-taxing issues. Once I learned I needed help, I started pursuing ways to heal my invisible wounds.  I have partaken in group backpacking trips, group motorcycle therapy, Equestrian therapy, EMDR therapy, cognitive therapy, and Peer to Peer therapy.  No one thing will work for everyone, but you find what works and build from that. Getting outside with fellow like minded service members and first responders keeps me on a good path.

I have become the full time Peer Support Specialist with my FD, and currently help my fellow brothers and sisters.  I am also a member of the Eastern Va Regional Peer Team, Be The One VA liaison, Ride Coordinator for American Legion Riders Post 110 Vabch.  And recently became a Board Member with Vets' Retreat Virginia.  Keeping a community of togetherness for each other to lean on is my passion. I'm here for those that want it & need it.
